IIIT-Sri City holds convocation

Union Minister of State for Education delivered convocation address in virtual mode 

261 students awarded degrees

Sri City, June 30, 2021: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Sri City conducted convocation in virtual mode on Wednesday.  Mr. Sanjay Dhotre, Honourable Union Minister of State for Education, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India delivered the convocation address. Mr. M. Balasubramaniam, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT-Sri City, Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy, IIIT Board Member and Founder Managing Director, Sri City and Dr. G. Kannabiran, Director of the Institute were present.

Addressing the students Mr. Sanjay Dhotre briefly talked about the National Education Policy-2020, which was devised with a vision to make India a global knowledge super power, and aims to produce students with scientific temper, rational and critical thinking, endowed with 21st Century knowledge and skills. 

Referring to new technologies of Industry viz. Industry 4.0 he urged the students, “Please do not just work in the development and improvement of these technologies, but examine how best they can be used to solve the problems of common man.” He mentioned that Technology should aim to improve farming efficiency, and the income of farmers. IT enabled services should ensure energy security, piped water to every household, wildlife conservation, etc.,

Appreciating the digital revolution taking place in the country, he called upon the students to play their part by leading this digital march, and make our country a world leader in every aspect of digital technology. 

Mr. M. Sunilkumar Shetty, Ms. N. Vaishnavi and Ms. V. Rajjalaksmi, who were the winners of institute medals received the  degrees and medals in person from Mr. Balasubramaniam, Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy, and Dr. Kannabiran. A total of 261 students, including 164 Computer Science and Engineering students and 97 Electronics and Communication Engineering students received degrees. It also includes 28 Honours students from both disciplines.  

Delivering the address Mr. Balasubramaniam said,”The remarkable growth of the fast-growing 180 billion USD IT/ITES industry in India over the past decade has shown the entire world our scientific, engineering and technological prowess and capabilities. The best multinationals of the world are leveraging Indian talent and rushing to set up large R&D hubs in India.  In line with Aatmanirbhar Bharat, we need to be self-reliant to create products and services for the Indian market at par with other countries.”

“Our future growth relies on competitiveness and innovation, skills and productivity, and these in turn rely on the education of our people. Technology will not replace great teachers, but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational. The new education policy which is ready for implementation is with lots of features and flexibility that pave ways for the country to be more dominant globally in the forthcoming years.  As a result of that, the Board of Governors have taken up the task of 15-Year vision and a 5-Year strategic plan for the institution,” he concluded  

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Kannabiran said, “We propose to significantly improve faculty-student ratio, augment R&D infrastructure and focus on student development initiatives.  We plan to launch online BTech programmes and other continuing education programmes at the certificate, diploma and MTech levels in our key areas of strength.  We also plan to take up in-house corporate training in emerging technology areas, joint degree programmes with suitable overseas universities, enhance our campus infrastructure for next generation students.   We will continue as a family to make IIIT Sri City as a Nationally Relevant and Globally Recognised Entrepreneurial Institution,”  

Established in 2013 as an Institution of Nation Importance under an Act of Parliament, IIIT Sri City has grown to be one of the top institutes among its peers   based on various programmes and initiatives. The institute offers BTech programmes in two disciplines- Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). The institute also offers MTech Programmes in AI & Machine Learning and Cyber Security. The institute also offers PhD programmes in both disciplines for practicing managers and Scientists.
